Son of Swami

Football is finally back!

It is football season No. 47 for the Son of Swami, who is so old he is on the verge of needing a walker to get around.

SOS’s summer vacation was cut short when the Big Ten practically begged SOS to make an appearance at its annual football media days in Chicago.

The magic word was “Chicago,” which meant SOS could spend some time with 2-year-old GSOS, trying to improve his vocabulary the way SOS did with GSOS’s mommy, DOSOS, MD, well over 30 years ago, teaching her words not taught in any school.

But DOSOS, MD got her revenge. Whenever SOS begins to speak, GSOS puts his hands over his ears and starts screaming. Karma.

Vacation officially ended Aug. 7, when SOS covered Michigan’s media day and then went to Detroit East English Village’s midnight practice — which nearly ended SOS’s 42-year marriage.

Between U-M’s media day and East English’s practice, SOS took Mrs. SOS, reputed to be the luckiest woman on the face of the earth, to the Goo Goo Dolls’ concert at Freedom Hill.

Unfortunately, the concert ran a bit late and there was no time to drop off Mrs. SOS at home before going to East English. So Mrs. SOS attended the first high school football practice of her life.

It will undoubtedly be her last.

Mrs. SOS is not really a big football fan. She can never figure out how far a team has to go and how many chances it gets to get there. In other words, she hasn’t grasped the first-and-10 concept.

Basketball is Mrs. SOS’s specialty. Before SOSOS, MBA’s basketball games she would tell him: “Box out, rebound, take the ball to the basket.”

She would also tell him the exact same things before his soccer games and cross-country and track meets.

As SOS searches for the next Goo Goo Dolls concert, not to mention an attorney, here are this week’s best football games.

Orchard Lake St. Mary’s at Macomb Dakota, 7 Thursday. What a way to start the season! Two-time defending Division 3 state champ No. 3 St. Mary’s at No. 5 Dakota. First-year Dakota coach Greg Baur gets thrown right into the fire in this one. St. Mary’s by the Lake 21, Dakota Fanning 17.

Canton vs. Dearborn Fordson at Wayne State, 7 Friday. In the good old days, this game would have been over by 8:05. While Canton still runs the ball as much as possible — the Chiefs would run on punts if they could — Fordson’s offense is more diversified. But the Fordson defense will still have to stop the run. Can’t Win 27, Ford’s Son 21.

Clarkston vs. Lapeer at Michigan Stadium, 7 Friday. This is the third year of the Lapeer program and it should make the playoffs for the third straight year. Don’t forget, Lapeer gave Clarkston its toughest playoff game two years ago on its way to the state title. Now the Lightning need a signature win, but SOS isn’t sure it will come this week. Last Train to Clarksville 20, La Perrier 17.

River Rouge vs. Chelsea at Wayne State, noon Saturday. This is the Division 5 runner-up (Rouge) vs. the Division 3 runner-up (Chelsea). While Chelsea lost 16 starters, it didn’t lose QB Jack Bush, one of the top passers around. Rouge returns six starters on defense and five on offense and also added QB Jairus Grissom from Dearborn Heights Robichaud. Rouge River 34, Jeff Daniels High 28, OT.

Ann Arbor Pioneer vs. Muskegon at Michigan Stadium, 7 Saturday. The winningest program in state history (Muskegon) takes on the second-winningest program (Pioneer). Pioneer has one of the state’s best two-way players in LB/RB Antjuan Simmons and he will have his hands full trying to keep up with QB Kalil Pimpleton. Muskie’s Gone 27, Pie High 20.

Position: wide receiver/defensive back

The scoop: Peoples-Jones has been the top-ranked player in this class since he entered Cass Tech and is rated one of the top receivers nationally. He caught 69 passes for 1,168 yards and 18 TDs as a junior, and has outstanding speed to go with good size.

4. Josh Ross

School: Orchard Lake St. Mary’s

Vitals: 6-1, 225

Position: linebacker/running back

The scoop: He has been the defensive force for the two-time defending Division 3 state champs. He has excellent instincts and reacts well to get to the ball carrier. Committed to Michigan.

Chippewa Valley out to prove doubters wrong, tops Lake Orion, 27-7

Clinton Twp. Chippewa Valley coach Scott Merchant

In the tough Macomb Area Conference Red Division, with defending Division 1 champ Romeo back in the fray and Macomb Dakota also lurking, not much may be expected of Clinton Twp. Chippewa Valley.

But watch out for coach Scott Merchant and the Big Reds after they dominated Lake Orion in the Prep Kickoff Classic, 27-7, Thursday night at Wayne State.

“We got a quick defense, we knew we had speed defensively,” said Merchant. “You never know. We know Lake Orion was going to run right at us. We thought our defense did a great job.

“We started three sophomores and 12 juniors tonight. We only had five starters back. Everybody’s told them they are no good. They’ve told our senior class we’re not good. They picked us last in the MAC Red.”

Steven Charles Jr. had a big first half on the ground for Chippewa Valley, banging out 129 yards on 11 carries, and the surprising defense, led by Amir Sanders-Tillman, shackled the Dragons’ passing game.

Chippewa Valley’s opening drive stalled when Lake Orion’s Chris Brown intercepted a Tommy Schuster pass.

“It was his first varsity game, so you never know what’s going to happen,” said Merchant of Schuster. “We think he’s going to be pretty good. He’s a pretty composed kid.”

Lake Orion returned the favor when Marcel Lewis recovered a fumble at midfield.

On the very next play, Charles burst 50 yards up the middle for a 7-0 lead for the Big Reds with 8:05 left in the first quarter.

Four turnovers highlighted the first half as the offenses kept coughing up the ball.

Schuster, a sophomore, used a short field to throw his first TD pass as a varsity player, hitting Jacob Rybicki with a 16-yard play to give the Big Reds a 13-0 lead with 4:22 left in the first half.

“It was a fun game, first game of the year, it was fun to be out there with my teammates,” said Schuster, the game’s MVP with 168 yards passing and three total touchdowns. “It was a rough first drive, but I got into it once the game started going on.”

“We left a lot of plays out there,” said Lake Orion coach Chris Bell. “We dropped two passes in the end zone. We turned it over twice. You can’t do that with those guys. They did a better job than we did.”

Jonathon Haggitt led Orion with nine rushes for 87 yards.

Warren Mott’s big plays from Jaalon Brown thwart Troy Athens, 28-7

Jaalon Brown deserved another shot.

As time was running out in the first quarter, Warren Mott’s senior wideout took a flare pass from Michael Pond to the left side, deked his defender and ran 64 yards into the end zone for the game’s first score … only to have it wiped away due to a holding call.

As time was running out in the second quarter, Mott once again called Brown’s number, and he caught a pass from Pond at midfield, curved and cut, and raced to the end zone … and somebody on the Mott O-line must have learned their lesson — there were no flags this time.

The result? A 72-yard touchdown on the final play of the half, giving the visiting Marauders the lead en route to the 28-7 win Thursday night.

“It was a good play for the team, pass block, and the coaches called the right play,” Brown said. “We weren’t satisfied with the score but we came out and did our thing.”

“That was a huge momentum swing and it changes the tone at halftime a bit,” Mott coach Tom Milanov said. “It allowed our seniors to get after it, and I went a little more passive which just isn’t my style, but it worked out.”

It would be convenient to say Brown’s play gave Mott enough momentum for the victory, but it didn’t happen that way. The Marauders squandered the first possession after halftime with two illegal procedure penalties and two sacks, and had to punt. Athens drove the ball back into the Mott red zone, and looked poised to score until the Red Hawks’ Andrew Yan was tackled for a loss on fourth-and-two by Brown.

He had six catches for 104 yards and a TD, but that wasn’t all. Besides the drive-stopping tackle, Brown also set up the Marauders’ final score by snaring his second interception.

“I was beat on the route,” he said, “but I just let my hops take over and I just got up and got it.”

Milanov saw some positives in the season-opening victory.

“Once the offensive line got going, they were hard to stop,” he said. “Defensively, I was fairly happy overall. We had some blown assignments here and there, but they had a tough time moving the ball on us.”

“They gassed us, especially right there before the half,” Athens coach Josh Heppner said. “There was no reason, absolutely no reason. Our youth got to us a bit in the secondary, there was a breakdown in coverage. Just little mistakes. It’s unfortunate, because we played real tough, but the lack of effort at the end just really got us.”

MIAC Coaches Poll: 1. Grosse Pte. Woods University-Liggett (3): 57; 2. Rochester Hills Lutheran Northwest (2): 52; 3. Sterling Heights Parkway (1): 51; 4. Southfield Christian: 40; 5. Westland Lutheran: 39; 6. Auburn Hills Oakland Christian: 31

Auburn Hills Oakland Christian (0-5, 0-9)

Strength: Offense

Top players: WR/DB Seth WIlliams, WR Cam Cotter, WR Ryder Patterson, DE AJ Hawkins, DE Elijah Kennedy, OL Josh Morgan

Outlook: The Lancers return their offensive backfield and two top receiving targets in Cotter and Petterson. Despite their winless 2015, some coaches around the league see them as a talented sleeper. If the roster can stay healthy, Oakland Christian could improve in leaps and bounds on the heels of an aerially efficient offense and an increasingly experienced roster.

Grosse Pte. Woods University Liggett (4-1, 6-4)

Strength: Defense

Top players: QB Connor McCarron, DE Charles Caine, DE Sam Durno, OL Desmond Darby, MLB Brady MCarron

Outlook: Liggett should continue to feature a dependable offense, with senior QB Connor McCarron managing an attack that’s impressively balanced between ground and air, and returns several starters from its defensive line. The Knights came away with a split in two games last season against Sterling Hts. Parkway, and a solid defensive effort could help them to a regular-season win against the division rival and a first-place finish.

Rochester Hills Lutheran Northwest (6-4, 3-2)

Strength: Defense

Top players: RB/LB Danny Macks, K/QB/WR Michael Justice, OT/DT Evan Bowlds, QB/LB Zach Alkire, OL/DL Henry Dodson, WR Paul Rosa

Outlook: The Crusaders line up similarly to last season, but with a year’s more experience nearly across the board. A versatile offense will feature both Justice and Alkire at quarterback, depending on formation. Add a defense anchored by Macks, among the league’s best linebackers, and expectations are decidedly higher than last year. After featuring underclassman-heavy rosters for the last two seasons, this year’s team is stacked with juniors.

Southfield Christian (3-6, 2-3)

Strength: Offense

Top players: DE/WR C.J. Robeson, WR David Robinson, WR/LB Ricky Brown

Outlook: On a team strapped for depth, Southfield Christian needs to stay healthy to compete with the top half of the MIAC standings. “Numbers are down,” according to head coach Larry Weiss, who will use a healthy chunk of his roster on both sides of the ball. Skill positions and efficiency on the offensive side, however, should prove a strength.

Sterling Hts. Parkway (7-4, 5-0)

Strength: Offense.

Top players: QB Jacob Bambrick, OL Alex Challangoe, WR Jackson Allen, WR Dominic Delicata, LB Maurice Hutchinson, S Julian Davis.

Outlook: Joe Beck begins his first season at the helm, but is lucky the Eagles are returning their starting quarterback and two top targets at wide receiver. The offense should be fully productive, but the defense is a question mark after losing eight starters to graduation. Nonetheless, Sterling Hts. Parkway remains the MIAC frontrunner.

Westland Lutheran (3-6, 1-4)

Strength: Offense

Top players: QB Luke Smith, RB DJ Nykiel, S Andy Saith, OL/DL Jeremy Orem, OL/DL Nick Glinn

Outlook: The Warriors return nine starters on each side of the ball, and a new partnership with Plymouth Christian has given head coach Paul Guse a new set of bodies to work with, expanding the roster to 29 and helping with depth. Keys to the season include plugging up a porous run defense, getting Nykiel the ball in space and staying healthy.

Key independents

Pontiac Notre Dame (8-3)

Strength: Defense, Special Teams

Top players: PK Bryce Bringer, OL Kyle Sassack, LB/RB Luke Adams, DB Zach Atkins, WR Josh Johnson, DE Dominic Famularo, DL John Paul Terzano

Outlook: After being suspended from the Detroit Catholic League over a scheduling controversy, Notre Dame will look for success as an independent. Four starters on the offensive line are returning, meaning Notre Dame signal-callers will have time to throw if a less experienced receiving corps finds space downfield. Placekicker Bryce Baringer is a weapon on field goals, too, with a long of 46 yards last year.

Birmingham Detroit Country Day (11-2)

Strength: Defense

Top players: LB Kolin Demens, DL Cole Bearden, DL Chris Wells, DL Tim Jackson, LB Adam Sakih, S/KR Chris Bergen, QB/S Steve Mann, WR Roy McCree, WR/DB LaNard Graham, C Will Humenny, RB Nick Neibauer

Outlook: Country Day returns the bulk of its starters on defense. An impressive defensive line will front Sakih and Demens, the younger brother of former U-M star and NFL linebacker Kenny Demens, at the linebacker spots. There are weapons at the receiver spots, too, balancing between Neibauer’s ground attack against Mann’s air game and making a repeat 11-2 season, or better, more than possible.

Harper Woods (5-4)

Strength: Defense

Top players: QB/CB Keshawn King, RB/CB Deshawn Mitchell, S/WR Qortez Scott, OL Christopher Gaffrey, LB Dayvon Collins, FB/DE Kelvin Jones, OL Robert Gay

Outlook: With 20 seniors, Harper Woods is one of the region’s more experienced teams. Most of key players see action on both sides of the ball, but there’s experience and depth in the secondary and enough experience to build on a promising 5-4 effort in 2015.

McCabe: River Rouge lights up Chelsea before lightning hits Detroit

$

River Rouge’s Sekou Doukoure receives a pass over Chelsea’s Braden Steele during the first half of Saturday’s game at Wayne State.

River Rouge’s Sekou Doukoure receives a pass over Chelsea’s Braden Steele during the first half of Saturday’s game at Wayne State.

With 58 seconds left in the third quarter of Saturday’s River Rouge/Chelsea game, the officials decided to send both teams off the Wayne State field and suspended the game.

Lightning had been spotted in the area.

What took them so long?

If they had been paying attention, they would have noticed that lighting had been there since the opening kickoff.

This lightning came in the form of River Rouge senior quarterback Jairus Grissom.

Grissom, a senior transfer from Dearborn Heights Robichaud, passed for 209 yards and ran for 106 to lead the Panthers to a 34-16 victory over Chelsea in the Prep Kickoff Classic.

The game was not resumed after a 21/2-hour delay to permit the Detroit King/Southfield game to begin at a reasonable time.

The Detroit Cass Tech/Oak Park game, which was scheduled to be Saturday’s third game, will be played today at 1 p.m., and Saturday tickets will be honored.

A three-star recruit, Grissom had some highlight reel plays, but none better than when he broke free and raced 35 yards for a touchdown. The play was special because he put a spectacular move on a defender that left the youngster grasping for air.

“The move was great,” Grissom said. “I knew I could make the move. I’ve been practicing it a lot, so I was really happy I made the move. I’m just glad I finished it. Usually, when people make the move, they finish at the 1-yard line. I finished with a touchdown.”

It was an exceptional opening-game performance by a player capable of being a difference-maker on a team that was the Division 5 runner-up a year ago.

“I thought Jairus did some special things today,” coach Corey Parker said. “Obviously, he’s got some things to work on, still has some things to learn. But I think he does things sometimes that’s not coached. That’s just something that he can naturally do.”

There are some other special players on the Rouge team, players like defensive back Reggie Pearson, who had one of the Panthers’ three interceptions.

“I would say, No. 1, they made a couple of unreal plays in the secondary,” Chelsea coach Brad Bush said. “Those are run-read plays on those interceptions. We probably can’t simulate Reggie Pearson very well.”

After a scoreless first quarter, Cameron Cooper returned a Rouge punt 75 yards for a touchdown five plays into the second quarter.

Rouge’s Eric Chenault picked off a pass and returned it to the Chelsea 2-yard line, from where Alexander Carter scored on the next play.

Four plays later, linebacker Savion Thomas batted a ball out of the air and made a one-handed interception to get the Rouge offense going in Chelsea territory. A 29-yard pass from Grissom to Sekou Doukoure set up Grissom’s sneak for a 14-7 lead midway through the second quarter.

Rouge led, 20-10, at halftime, and Grissom scored two touchdowns in the third quarter.

Chelsea quarterback Jack Bush scored on a 2-yard sneak just moments before the game was halted.

“I really wanted to come back and play,” coach Bush said. “But at the end of the day — if we’re playing at 6 p.m., we ate pregame meal at 7:30 a.m. We brought oranges. Every kid had one orange. That was really, for me, the defining factor. At some point you have think what’s best for the kids.”

With an increase in the enrollment of about 150 students, Rouge likely will play in Division 4 this season. Grissom will help against tougher competition and so will a dynamic defense.

“We did some great stuff,” Parker said. “I thought we challenged them to get the ball out of their hands early, and we put a stunt in their run game. It was a tough system to defend, but I think my guys competed, fought off blocks and made good tackles.”

Northville forces four turnovers in 20-10 win over Brighton

A football lays on the field.

A football lays on the field.

Turnovers often decide football games, and Thursday night at Northville was no different.

The Mustangs stole the ball away from Brighton four times, including once for the winning touchdown, to defeat the Bulldogs, 20-10, in the Kensington Lakes contest.

The crucial play came early in the third quarter when Brighton lined up to punt from its own territory. A bad snap that sailed over everyone ended up in the end zone, where Northville’s Caleb Sheehan jumped on it for a touchdown, making the score 17-7 and giving Northville all the scoring it needed.

RelatedMcCabe: Allen Park makes a statement Downriver

“We were fortunate to be the benefactors of some turnovers tonight,” Northville coach Matt Ladach said.

That TD was just the beginning, as Brighton never seemed to regain its footing.

The Bulldogs (1-1) did take the ball down the field on the next drive and closed the gap to 17-10 when Rudy Ramirez kicked a 19-yard field goal with 2:17 left in the third quarter. But Brighton’s next opportunity was stalled when Northville defensive back Alex Kim made an interception at the goal line and ran it back out to the Brighton 18-yard line.

The Mustangs took their turn at driving down the field, and capped off the scoring with a 38-yard field goal by Jake Moody with 1:02 left in the fourth.

Northville kicker Jake Moody ‘is an absolute weapon’

Kim then recovered a fumble on the ensuing kickoff and Northville (2-0) ran out the clock.

“I was just in the right place at the right time, as both times someone else helped me out there,” Kim said. “On the pick there was pressure there with the line chasing down the quarterback, so he threw a bad ball. On the fumble, I think Kyle White forced the fumble and I was in the right place.

“Our offense did a really good job taking care of the football, so it makes it so much easier for us on defense.”

Brighton got on the board first when Ramirez grabbed a 45-yard pass from quarterback Cameron Tullar and outran the Northville secondary for a touchdown and 7-0 lead with 1:05 left in first quarter.

Brighton’s Brennan Russell then intercepted a Northville pass — the Bulldogs’ only takeaway — and returned it inside the red zone. But the Bulldogs were stopped on downs and on the ensuing drive, the Mustangs drove down the field to eventually set up a first Moody field goal of 33 yards. He made it to close the gap to 7-3.

River Rouge to appeal forfeited game

River Rouge is preparing to appeal the forfeiture of its Week One victory over Chelsea.

River Rouge's Lee Payton runs the ball during the second half of River Rouge's 34-16 win Saturday at Wayne State.

River Rouge’s Lee Payton runs the ball during the second half of River Rouge’s 34-16 win Saturday at Wayne State.

Cory Parker, Rouge’s athletic director and football coach, said he isn’t sure the school used an ineligible player against Chelsea, a game that was halted late in the third quarter after a 2 ½ hour delay by thunder and lightning.

“It’s still in appeal process, so we can’t really speak too much into it,” Parker said, “but I can tell you what the allegations were.”

It is alleged that a player who played in Rouge’s Week One junior varsity game also played in the 34-16 varsity victory over Chelsea.

►Related:River Rouge football forfeits Week 1 win over Chelsea

“One of the junior varsity guys that played in the junior varsity game on Thursday, we also dressed him on Saturday,” Parker said. “He played a great (JV) game. We told him we’re going to bring him up to varsity, he did an awesome job; he has a 3.0 GPA. He’s an awesome kid and deserved the opportunity to be at Wayne State for the Prep Kickoff Classic.”

If the player did indeed play in the varsity game that would be a violation of Michigan High School Athletic Association rules. A football player cannot play in a JV game and a varsity game in the same week. A player can move between the varsity and JV teams throughout the season, but can play in only one game per week.

“He was on the sidelines,” Parker said. “What I have to do is evaluate the film because the allegation is the kid played in the game. I have to take a peek at that myself because that’s part of our appeal.”

At this point the MHSAA was convinced enough to award the Week One victory to Chelsea.

River Rouge, which advanced to the Division 5 finals last season, beat Ann Arbor Huron, 70-0, in Week 2.

These five high school football players turned in exceptional performances to lead their teams to victory:

Brenden Sersaw, Clare: The 5-foot-7, 140-pound sophomore receiver/defensive back caught six passes for 276 yards, tied for 14th best in state history, and scored on TD catches of 73, 77, 76 and 33 yards in a 42-20 win over Beal City.

Colton Kloote, Allendale: The 5-11, 190-pound senior quarterback completed 14 of 22 passes for 222 yards and TDs of 36, 6, 18, 45 and 30 yards. He added 167 yards rushing on 15 carries as Allendale hit the 70-point mark for the first time since 1975.

Tariq Reid, Davison: For the second week in a row, the 6-foot, 200-pound junior scored five rushing touchdowns, this past week on runs of 53, 49, 22, 62 and 47 yards. He finished with 308 yards on 19 carries in a 49-14 victory over Mt. Pleasant.

Kolby Canfield, Stockbridge: The 6-2, 200-pound senior receiver caught 13 passes for 188 yards and three touchdowns and completed the only pass he attempted for a 61-yard TD in a 48-36 victory over Royal Oak.

Nick Putnam, Laingsburg: The 5-11 junior quarterback completed 21 of 25 passes for 358 yards and three touchdowns to lead the No. 4 team in Division 6 to a 37-26 win over Fulton.

McCabe: Lowell football gets it down with actual little brothers

McCabe: Lowell football gets it down with actual little brothers

Lowell coach Noel Dean

Lowell coach Noel Dean

No matter what former Michigan players Mike Hart and LaMarr Woodley say, being a little brother is a good thing at Lowell.

“There’s nothing wrong with being a little brother in this program,” Lowell coach Noel Dean said. “We welcome it.”

Welcome it? Dean and his coaches embrace it. In fact, Dean has built one of the state’s most successful programs based on younger brothers following their siblings to the Lowell football field.

“I was thinking about that last night,” Dean said Saturday. “I haven’t done the math, but last year I did the math, and we had 18 little brothers. We’ve got seven on offense alone this year.”

One of those little brothers is junior quarterback David Kruse. His brother Connor was a walk-on tackle at Michigan State and started in the Rose Bowl. Another brother, Danny, is a freshman wrestler at MSU.

This Kruse sparked Lowell to Friday’s 21-10 victory over Rockford in one of the state’s best matchups. This was Rockford’s first game after it forfeited its Aug. 26 opener to Saline when more than 35 players became ill.

“We’ve played them three times now, and that’s the most physical they’ve ever been,” Dean said of the Rams. “They played outstanding. … Our only score in the first half was off a pick-six.”

Lowell trailed, 10-7, at halftime, and then Kruse came alive. He rushed for 98 yards in the second half and completed three of five passes for 93 yards and a touchdown.

“He did play better, but we all played better in the second half,” Dean said. “It all kind of plays off itself. The offensive line struggled a little bit in the first half and credit to all of them. In both games, actually, he’s played better in the second half.”

One of the reasons Lowell played better in the second half was freshman coach Matt Dood, who found a play that might ignite the running game, which is part of the reason the Red Arrows ran for 155 yards in the second half.

“He suggested it to our offensive coordinator a run play that might work against the way they were scheming us. Our offensive coordinator and line coach put it in at halftime, and it worked.”

Couple this victory with the 36-19 win over highly regarded Warren De La Salle on Aug. 26, and this Lowell team, with only three returning starters, might be on its way to another long state playoff run.

“Honestly, I was not anticipating it under any stretch of the imagination,” Dean said. “Before the season we had a long talk about staying the course whether we win or lose football games this year and try to get to Game 10.

“In the back of my mind, I was thinking about it as if we were losing. But I coupled it with winning or losing, and now we have to maintain an edge since we’ve won a couple.”

Cody White caught 59 passes for 1,148 yards and 14 TDs last season.

Cody White caught 59 passes for 1,148 yards and 14 TDs last season.

White now 2-0

Cody White is an all-state receiver, but with quarterback Johnny Tracy injured, he is 2-0 as Walled Lake Western’s starting quarterback.

“He was going to be our starting quarterback if Johnny didn’t transfer in in January,” coach Mike Zdebski said. “With him stepping in, our mind-set was: ‘He was going to be our guy anyway, so what’s the big deal?’ ”

The big deal is that White, who has committed to play at Michigan State, led a 33-30 comeback victory over Canton.

Canton might be the best 0-2 team in North America, suffering a last-minute loss to Dearborn Fordson in the opener.

“I think it’s good for us because we were down 13 points in the second half,” Zdebski said. “Even though we’ve been in those games over the years, now these guys have gone through that situation: OK, you’re down two scores, what are you going to do? Are you going to fall apart and point fingers or just keep playing? The guys just kept playing.”

White threw a 29-yard TD pass to Justin Thomas with 37 seconds left. White finished 9-for-21 for 190 yards and two TDs and ran for 101 yards and two TDs.
